In Summary:
Our position...our goals
The
main purpose of our Water Wars is to alert and inform sportsmen, environmentalists
and citizens of some of the major problems and concerns that are developing
because of the booming bottled water phenomenon and increasing worldwide
water shortages.
- Bottled
water will always be sold because of the huge demand and incredible
profits. We hope, however, that bottlers will become more responsible
in selecting extraction sites, work in concert with citizens whose areas
are affected and use every precaution to preserve the sensitive hydrology
of the area.
- We strongly
feel that the exact origin of the captured water be printed on the label,
especially if it is "spring" water. We're against deceptive
text and graphic labels. We believe the label should also carry an expiration
date.
- We strongly
urge that modern scientific monitoring systems be used (even in limited
water extractions) to prevent irreparable damage to the environment
and water system. The cost of this should be paid for by the bottling
company and monitored by independent hydrologists and state conservation
agencies.
- We strongly
urge that state and federal governments close the existing gaping loopholes
that allow bottling companies to extract huge quantities of water without
state conservation agency and local approval or supervision.
- Whenever
possible please express your bottled water or other water concerns to
your congressmen, senators and state government.
- Urge your
sportsman's or environmental club to monitor any current or pending
bottle water operations, no matter how small or large, and report its
findings to its membership and national office.
- We strongly
believe that an environmental "air, water and earth" class
should be taught in every high school with the same importance that
history, literature or political science are now taught.
- We're
against the privatization of water and believe it is a shared, public
trust and a collective responsibility of governments at all levels and
local citizen communities.
Respectfully,
Jim C. Chapralis
